Objectives: Students' academic achievement is affected by various factors such as cognitive and socio-
economic-cultural factors. Therefore, this study examines models of the socio-cultural approach based on
Vygotsky's theory in teaching biological subjects. Socio-cultural approaches emphasize the
interdependence of social and individual processes in the joint construction of knowledge.
In this review study, international databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched
using keywords related to sociocultural approach, Vygotsky's theory, education, learning, and biology
until 2024. The inclusion criteria for the study were review and original research articles.
The contents of 31 articles and books were used in this study. A review of the studies conducted showed
that the use of models of socio-cultural approaches such as the role of science and technology, the role of
cooperative learning, the role of computer-assisted collaborative learning, and the role of the approach of
history and philosophy of science to the lecture method in teaching biological subjects leads to the
promotion of education and the enhancement of the teaching-learning process.
The subjects studied in biology are distinct from the topics of other sciences, including physical sciences,
and the use of different areas, including the socio-cultural area, in its teaching is considered a necessity.
