Abstract

The purpose of the present study is comparing the effect of two teaching methods problem solving and traditional teaching methods on the learning of the concept of line and linear equations in ninth grade female students in Miyaneh city. The statistical population is all ninth grade female students in Miyaneh city in the academic year 1399-1400 (486 people), from which 60 students were selected using cluster random sampling method and randomly placed in two groups of 30 people: traditional teaching method (control) and problem solving (experiment). Then, for two months, the first group was trained in the traditional method and the second group was trained in the problem solving method. Students in both groups were evaluated before and after the intervention and also one month after the intervention in terms of the the variable of progress in learning the concept of line and linear equations. Independent t-test was used to examine the differences between groups and also paired t-test was used to examine the differences within the groups. Findings show that the traditional teaching method has no significant effect on the learning of the concept of line and linear equations in ninth grade female students, but the problem solving teaching method has a significant effect on their learning rate. Also, the difference between the two groups in the post-test and follow-up stages was significant. The results showed that the problem solving method leads to more and more stable learning of the concept of line and linear equations in ninth grade female students than the traditional method.
