Purpose: The main issue in science education is that, given the importance of science education in the world's educational systems, why have we not witnessed its effective implementation in practice? What obstacles are there in this path? And how can we best help the education system achieve its anticipated goals in this area by identifying the harms and providing practical solutions? Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the challenges of teaching science in the four grade of elementary school from the perspective of teachers in Diyala province.
Research Method: The type of research is a descriptive survey and the population included primary school teachers of Diyala province in the academic year (2023-2024). The sample size was obtained through Cochran's formula of 270 people. The research tool was a questionnaire with 30 items in five subscales (goals, educational content, implementation methods, learning experiences & opportunities, and space & equipment) in Likert scale. The reliability coefficient of the science education challenges questionnaire was estimated at 0.83.
Result: The results showed that the challenges of teaching science lessons from the teachers' point of view are average. According to the components, the challenges of teaching science lessons from the teachers' point of view in terms of goals, were below average, in terms of content, were average, and in terms of implementation methods, experiences & learning opportunities, and space & equipment, were above average.
Conclusion: Based on the results of the research, the existing curricula in the field of science education in the Iraqi education system should have specific and well-defined goals & policies, and science education should be considered in the form of official school programs & activities. Specific and well-defined methods for teaching science-related subjects should be designed so that the necessary knowledge and skills can be transferred to them. Appropriate learning experiences and opportunities should be designed for science education in schools, and specialized meetings and conferences should be held with the presence of experts in the field of examining scientific issues. Necessary measures should be taken to make the necessary changes & amendments to the content and subjects of science education.
